The Legal 500 Arbitration Power List Latin America

The Arbitration Powerlist: Latin America is said to highlight and showcase “the leading practitioners of the world’s most fertile grounds for producing arbitration talent”. Elina Mereminskaya was included in the 2021 and 2023 ranking. The 2021 publication includes an extensive interview with her, some extracts follow below:

“I believe that I bring what I would call an all-around experience to an arbitration. What I mean is that I have acted as arbitrator, I worked at the secretariat of an arbitral institution, I acted as parties’ counsel, and as secretary to an arbitral tribunal. Currently, my main line of work includes interactions with construction companies or project owners, that is to say, the final users of arbitration. Such interaction allows me to understand their needs from an insider position. All these different roles I have played help me to balance different interests when making decisions as arbitrator.
In addition, and especially since I have joined my current firm, I have acquired an in-depth understanding of the construction industry. I work on a day-to-day basis with engineers, architects and other technical professionals, which has allowed me to comprehend the concepts subjacent in all construction contracts, including time impact or calculation of damages, which I believe is an advantage.
Also, I have lived, studied and worked in three very different countries, that is, Russia (or more accurately the Soviet Union and Russia), Germany and Chile. Because of that, I am very comfortable with the application of foreign laws. In general terms, I have been an ex-pat for so long, so that an international setting feels like home.”
